Used Cold Plunge:
buy the chiller first, the tub second.

Quick answer

A used cold plunge is a good buy when the chiller passes a timed cooldown in front of you and the price sits below the brand's own refurbished units, which in October 2026 listed 20 to 40 percent under new with some warranty attached. A private sale almost never carries a warranty: Plunge, Ice Barrel, Renu and Inergize all limit coverage to the original purchaser. Drain everything for the move, let the chiller stand as long as its maker says, and reset the water and filter before the first session.

Where to find a used cold plunge for sale

Used plunges come from local private sellers, gyms and studios replacing equipment, and brands reselling returns, and they differ mostly in how much protection you get.

Local listings on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp and eBay carry no warranty and usually no returns. Their advantage: you can usually watch the unit run before you pay, which matters more than any other check here.

Gyms, studios and spas sell units that may have run many sessions a day, and residential warranties treat that as a different product. Plunge's residential terms exclude commercial use, Inergize cuts commercial coverage to six months, and Ice Barrel covers non-commercial use only. Ask whether it is a commercial model, how many sessions a day it ran, and for the service log.

Brand refurbished programs are the safest used route, but there are fewer than search results suggest. On the brands' own stores in October 2026:

  • Renu Therapy: a refurbished Cold Stoic 3.0 at $8,500 and a Vero at $6,000. Renu says they are returns refitted with new plumbing and decking, with the same warranty as a new tank and all sales final.
  • Inergize: a certified refurbished tub at $1,790 to $2,190, with a 90-day warranty against one year on a new unit.
  • Penguin Chillers: refurbished chillers at about 20 percent off with a 90-day warranty, and scratch-and-dent units at about 10 percent off. Most were sold out.
  • Plunge: its old certified refurbished page now redirects to the new tub, and its store lists no refurbished item.
  • Ice Barrel and BlueCube: no refurbished program listed on their sites.

If you are torn between a used chilled tub and a new ice-cooled barrel at a similar price, our Plunge vs Ice Barrel comparison sets out what each one asks of you every week.

How to price a used cold plunge against new

Start from what the same model costs new today on the brand's own store, then aim below the brand's own refurbished price, because refurbished units come inspected and warrantied and a private sale does not. Use the sale price: Plunge listed The Plunge at $8,490 in October 2026 but sold it for $6,790.

Brand stores, October 2026. Penguin returns figure is its general store policy.

The refurbished band runs about 25 percent under new at Renu with a full warranty, 20 percent at Penguin with 90 days, and 40 percent at Inergize with three months. Measure Inergize against the Elite's current $2,990, not the $3,790 comparison price on its refurbished listing. A private sale with no warranty and no return should land below that band.

Worked example: a used The Plunge

New price you would pay: $6,790 on plunge.com in October 2026, with a 1-year warranty, a complimentary 2-year extension Plunge values at $299, and free curbside delivery in its core zones.

Refurbished band applied: 25 percent off is $5,093; 40 percent off is $4,074.

Costs a new buyer does not carry: moving it, where Plunge's own $250 in-home delivery upgrade is a fair stand-in for a truck and helpers, plus a filter pack ($28 to $74 at Plunge) and sanitizer. Call it $350.

Fair range: about $3,700 to $4,750 for a unit that passes the cooldown below, toward the top only with the receipt, a clean error history and a known UV lamp date.

Running costs are the same used or new; see our cold plunge cost breakdown.

Does a cold plunge warranty transfer to a second owner?

Usually not: every major brand whose terms we read in October 2026 ties coverage to the original buyer.

  • Plunge's current residential warranties cover "the original residential purchaser" for one year, excluding commercial use and freeze damage on a tub that was not winterized.
  • Ice Barrel covers "the original consumer purchaser only", caps its limited lifetime barrel warranty at 3 years, and calls its chiller warranty not transferable.
  • Renu's tank warranty, 5 years on components and 1 year on the chiller, applies to the original purchaser, or the owner who received it as a gift.
  • Inergize says its warranty does not pass to a later owner, even if the product is resold or gifted.
  • Penguin Chillers has no original-purchaser clause, but voids its warranty if the serial label is removed or defaced or the unit was not bought from an authorized reseller. Ask Penguin in writing, with the serial number.

That gives the warranty a price you can subtract. Penguin charges $184.99 to take the Cold Therapy Chiller from one year of cover to two, and $284.98 for three. Renu sells a Cold Stoic 3.0 chiller extension, one year to five, for $499.99. A private seller cannot hand you that cover, so the asking price should already reflect it.

Used cold plunge inspection checklist

Inspect the chiller first: it is the most expensive part and the one photos tell you least about. Ask the seller to have the tub full with the chiller off for several hours before you arrive, so the water starts near room temperature, and bring your own thermometer.

The cooldown test
Note the start temperature, set the chiller to its lowest setting, close the lid and read again after 60 minutes. The fastest a chiller can cool is its BTU per hour divided by the pounds of water. Water weighs about 8.34 lbs a gallon and needs 1 BTU per pound per degree, so 100 gallons is 834 lbs, and a 7,500 BTU/hr Penguin Cold Therapy Chiller has a ceiling near 9F an hour. Real pull-down is slower because the tub gains heat: Hot Spring lists about 10.5 hours to take its Vigor from 80F to 40F in air around 98F, under 4F an hour, and Sun Home about 8 hours to reach 37-46F. A drop of a degree or less in an hour, from a chiller sized for the tub, means walk away or price in a repair.

The same arithmetic exposes DIY sales with the wrong chiller. Active Aqua rates its 1/10 HP chiller at 1,020 BTU/hr for 10 to 40 gallons; on a 100-gallon tub its ceiling is about 1.2F an hour, enough to hold a small tub cold but not to pull a big one down.

Used cold plunge checklist: take it with you
Chiller
Timed cooldown from a known start, on your own thermometer.
Compressor runs steadily while the water is well above setpoint. Stop-start every few minutes points to a fault.
A steady hum is normal. Rattling, grinding or a hard clunk at each start is not.
Oily, dusty patches on refrigerant joints: a first clue to a leak, not proof (ACHR News).
Condenser coil clean and unbent, fan spinning freely, vents clear.
Error history. On Plunge's Evolve chillers, P06 (low pressure) and E01 mean stop and call support; CF, NF and FF point to filter or flow.
Serial label present and readable.
Water path
Pump: water flowing from the return within minutes of start, no grinding.
Filter housing: no cracks, cap threads and O-ring intact.
UV-C lamp date. Hot Spring says replace it every 12 months, and that most lamps lose effectiveness after 9-12 months even while lit.
Shell and body
Cracks at fittings and corners, blisters, delamination.
Liner: tears, lifting edges, staining that will not scrub off.
Waterlogged foam: a drained tub still dripping from seams or panels hours later, or soft panels.
Inflatables: inflated to the listed pressure the day before and still firm; soapy water on seams and valves.
Wood: gaps between staves, soft or blackened wood at the base, loose hoops.
Paperwork
Receipt, model number, manual, service records, and the dates of the last filter and UV lamp changes.
The maker is still trading and still sells filters and parts.

The last item is not hypothetical. Edge Theory Labs' own site now says the company has gone out of business and its app is shut down, with repairs through a paid third-party service center, so a used Edge Theory Labs tub has no maker behind it and should be priced that way. For stave tubs, our wooden cold plunge tub guide covers swelling and rot.

Cold plunge chiller repair: what a failed test can cost

A chiller that fails the cooldown means a technician or a new chiller, and either can cost more than the discount you negotiated. Plunge charges a $135 out-of-warranty diagnostic fee, credited toward parts but not labor. Refrigerant is a professional job: since January 2018 the EPA has required Section 608 certification to service stationary refrigeration systems containing HFCs.

Replacement prices set the ceiling on that risk. Plunge sold its Pro Chiller for $3,490 in October 2026 ($3,990 list), and Penguin lists the Cold Therapy Chiller at $1,949.99. Hydroponic chillers cost less but need a separate pump; our cheap cold plunge chiller guide compares the budget end. If the asking price minus a replacement chiller is not a fair price for the tub alone, negotiate.

Moving a used cold plunge home

Drain everything, carry the empty chiller upright, and let it stand as long as its maker specifies before you power it. Water left in the plumbing can freeze and crack parts in a cold truck or garage. Plunge's first-generation winterization guide notes that water stays in the plumbing under the tub after the drain stops, and suggests a shop vac or tipping the tub; its chiller drains by turning it upside down, without resting the ports on the ground.

Weight decides the crew. Renu lists the Cold Stoic 3.0 at about 350 lbs, so plan for a ramp or lift gate and helpers, and measure doorways before you agree a price.

How long the chiller stands before power-on, per the maker
Plunge
At least 4 hours after its chiller has been turned over to drain, so the coolant can settle.
Sun Home
About 4 hours upright before it is switched on, so the refrigerant settles.
Hot Spring (Vigor)
24 hours after installation, because of the orientation it shipped in.

Use your model manual; without one, wait 24 hours, the longest figure here. Outdoors, the outlet needs GFCI protection under the 2023 National Electrical Code.

Sanitation reset before the first plunge

Treat a used plunge's water system as unknown: drain, scrub, fit a new filter, then refill and sanitize before anyone gets in. The CDC's Legionella guidance for hot tubs names sediment and biofilm, temperature, water age and disinfectant level as the factors that let bacteria grow, and tells operators to scrub all surfaces at each drain and replace cartridge filters regularly.

01
Drain and scrub
Empty the tub, filter housing and chiller, then scrub every wetted surface, including around each fitting, where slime collects.
02
New filter, and a new lamp if its age is unknown
Hot Spring tells Vigor owners to replace the filter every 6-8 months and the UV-C lamp every 12.
03
Refill and sanitize
Refill, run the circulation, and bring the sanitizer up to your maker's level before the first session.
04
Check and record
Check sanitizer and pH with strips, note the date, and start a water change schedule.

Our guide to keeping cold plunge water clean sets out the routine from there, and hydrogen peroxide for cold plunges covers a non-chlorine route and its limits.

Scam and payment red flags

Walk away from a seller who will not let you see the unit run, wants a deposit sight unseen, or will only take a wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or payment app. The FTC says a credit card best protects you if something goes wrong, and warns never to buy from online sellers who insist on those other methods.

  • A price far below the refurbished band, with stock photos or photos that do not match the color or serial number.
  • No model or serial number, or a removed serial label.
  • A chiller that "just needs a recharge". Treat that as a refrigerant leak until a certified technician says otherwise.

For a local sale, pay in person after the cooldown and get a bill of sale with the model and serial number.

How to sell your used cold plunge

Price it below the brand's refurbished units, show buyers a cooldown, and release the plunge only once payment shows in your own account.

  • Gather the receipt, model and serial number, manual, and the last filter and UV lamp dates.
  • Have the tub full and the chiller off before viewings, so buyers can run the cooldown.
  • Drain the tub, filter housing and chiller before pickup, and pass on the maker's settle time.
  • Follow the FTC's seller advice: never deposit a check for more than the selling price, decline mobile payments from strangers, and never share a verification code.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth buying a used cold plunge?+
Yes, if the chiller passes a timed cooldown in front of you and the price sits below the brand's own refurbished units, which listed 20 to 40 percent under new in October 2026 with some warranty attached. Skip any unit you cannot see run.
How much should I pay for a used cold plunge?+
Start from the current sale price on the brand store and go below the refurbished band. For The Plunge, which sold new for $6,790 in October 2026, that is roughly $3,700 to $4,750 for a working unit after moving costs and a fresh filter.
Does a cold plunge warranty transfer to a new owner?+
Usually not. Plunge, Ice Barrel, Renu and Inergize all limit their published warranties to the original purchaser. Penguin Chillers voids coverage if the serial label is removed or the unit was not bought from an authorized reseller, so ask Penguin in writing.
How long should a chiller sit before I turn it on after moving it?+
Follow your model manual. Plunge says at least 4 hours after draining its chiller, Sun Home about 4 hours, and Hot Spring 24 hours after installing its Vigor. Without a manual, wait 24 hours.
What is the most expensive thing to go wrong on a used cold plunge?+
The chiller. Plunge charges $135 to diagnose an out-of-warranty fault, refrigerant work needs an EPA-certified technician, and a replacement chiller cost $1,949.99 to $3,490 in October 2026.
