At 35-50 ppm, H2O2 achieves approximately 99% bacterial kill rate (2-log reduction) against common water pathogens with adequate contact time. This is less than the 99.99% (4-log) achieved by ozone, but sufficient for typical solo or small-group cold plunge use combined with good filtration.

The distinctive advantage of H2O2 over chlorine: it decomposes to water (H2O) and oxygen (O2) without forming chloramines, haloacetic acids, or other disinfection byproducts. For users who want chemical sanitation without chlorine chemistry, H2O2 is the most practical option.

The most important safety note: the 35% concentrate itself is hazardous. Wear nitrile gloves and eye protection when measuring and adding. Do not breathe fumes directly from the bottle. H2O2 will oxidize and bleach any organic material it contacts - skin, fabric, wood surfaces. Dilute in a bucket of water before adding to the plunge, rather than pouring directly from the bottle.

Epsom salt in cold plunges: what the evidence says

Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate, MgSO4) is popular in bath products and frequently suggested for cold plunge use. The rationale is transdermal magnesium absorption - the idea that soaking in magnesium-rich water raises blood magnesium levels and reduces muscle soreness.

The evidence does not support this for cold plunge use. The most-cited study (Waring, 2004) used hot water at 50-55°C - temperatures far above cold plunge ranges. At cold plunge temperatures of 5-15°C, cutaneous blood flow is strongly vasoconstricted, dramatically reducing whatever transdermal absorption might occur at warm temperatures. No published study has demonstrated meaningful magnesium absorption from cold-temperature Epsom salt immersion.

Practically: Epsom salt does not sanitize water. It adds magnesium sulfate to your water, increasing TDS by roughly 1,200 ppm per pound per 100 gallons. This significantly shortens your effective water change interval. If you add 2 lbs per 100 gallons (a typical recommendation), you have started the plunge with 2,400 ppm TDS before any bather contamination - close to the 1,500 ppm threshold for a water change.

Summary: Epsom salt is harmless to add if you find it enjoyable. It does not sanitize water, does not meaningfully raise blood magnesium through cold-water immersion, and will increase your TDS faster, shortening water change intervals. If water care efficiency is the goal, skip it.

Step-by-step H2O2 cold plunge setup

  1. Fill plunge with fresh water. Test source water pH (target 7.2-7.6).
  2. Adjust pH if needed using sodium carbonate (pH Up) or sodium bisulfate (pH Down).
