Who this chiller is for

Read the spec sheet honestly and the Active Aqua 1/10 HP picks its own buyer. It is a 1,020 BTU/hr unit rated for 10 to 40 gallons. That is a narrow window. If your setup is a personal tub, a chest freezer conversion filled partway, or a small dedicated plunge, this unit fits and stays quiet doing it. If your tub holds 50 gallons or more, this is the wrong chiller and you should move on to a bigger one.

Performance: what 1,020 BTU/hr actually does

Cooling power is the whole story here, and it is modest. 1,020 BTU/hr is enough to pull a 30-gallon tub of room-temperature water down to a usable plunge temperature and hold it, provided your ambient is not punishing. Inside its rated 10 to 40 gallon window it does the job. The minimum set point is 42°F (5.6°C), which is colder than most people sit at. A typical target of 45 to 55°F (7 to 13°C) is well within reach for a small tub.

Push past the rated volume and the limits show fast. In a tub over 50 gallons the 1/10 HP cannot maintain 40°F (4.4°C) on a warm day. The compressor simply cannot remove heat faster than a large body of water and a warm room add it. This is not a defect, it is physics meeting a small compressor. On the plus side, the small compressor draws the least electricity of any compressor chiller we cover. Running costs are low, and that is a real advantage if the unit cycles often in a small, well insulated tub.

Like every Active Aqua chiller, this is the cooling unit only. To run it you need an external water pump matched to its flow, tubing or hose sized to its barbed inlet and outlet, and a standard grounded outlet. No special electrical circuit is required, because the draw is so low. Budget for the pump and fittings when you compare the $499 sticker against an all-in-one tub.

Price and value vs alternatives

At $499 the 1/10 HP is the cheapest compressor chiller here, but cheapest is not the same as best value. Its price-to-BTU ratio is the weakest in the Active Aqua line. For $100 more you can step up, and most people should.
