Wim Hof style breathing is repeated forceful over-breathing followed by holding your breath. Doing this and then getting into water, or doing it while in the water, is genuinely life-threatening. The hyperventilation drives your carbon dioxide down so far that your brain's urge to breathe is delayed. Your blood oxygen can then drop to the point of unconsciousness before you ever feel the need to take a breath. You black out with no warning.
This is called shallow water blackout, and it can happen in a pool, a lake, or even a bathtub. Multiple deaths have been linked to people combining hyperventilation breathwork with water. The rule is simple and non-negotiable: keep breathwork and water completely separate. Why controlling the exhale matters

Breathe before, out of the water
Take a few slow, easy breaths standing beside the plunge to settle your nervous system. Keep it gentle. Do not do rounds of forceful hyperventilation breathwork here, and never do breath-holds near the water. Box breathing
Inhale for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four, then repeat. The equal, measured rhythm regulates the nervous system, steadies the mind, and gives you a task to focus on instead of the cold. The physiological sigh
Take a full inhale through the nose, then add a second short sniff of air on top, then let a long slow exhale out through the mouth.
