Cold Plunge and Testosterone:
what the evidence really says.

There is no strong direct evidence that cold plunging meaningfully raises testosterone in humans. No controlled trial shows a durable increase in serum testosterone from cold immersion. Does cold plunging raise testosterone?
The honest short answer is no, or at least not in any way that current human research can demonstrate. The claim that cold water immersion boosts testosterone is one of the most repeated ideas in the cold plunge and biohacking world, and it is also one of the weakest when you trace it back to actual studies.
The confusion usually comes from blending three separate things into one claim. Cold protects the testes from heat, which supports sperm production. Cold acutely raises stress hormones like norepinephrine and cortisol. And cold makes people feel alert and energized. None of those three is the same as raising serum testosterone, yet they get collapsed into a tidy marketing line that the plunge will spike your T.
We will lay out what is documented, what is plausible, and what is simply hype, because the accuracy here is genuinely the most useful thing we can give you. If you want the plunge to do something it cannot, you will be disappointed. If you understand what it actually does, it earns a sensible place in your routine.
What the research actually shows
Start with the testes. They sit outside the body in the scrotum precisely because spermatogenesis works best at roughly 2 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit below core temperature. This is a well-established piece of reproductive physiology. Heat is the enemy of sperm: research on hot tub and sauna use, including Shefi et al. 2007 in Fertility and Sterility, found that men who stopped wet heat exposure saw measurable improvements in sperm count and motility over the following months. Laptop and tight-clothing heat shows the same direction of effect.
This is where the testosterone story leaks. Because cold avoids scrotal overheating, it is genuinely sperm-friendly. But sperm production and testosterone are governed by different cell populations in the testes, the Sertoli cells and the Leydig cells respectively, and protecting one does not automatically raise the other. Keeping the testes cool helps spermatogenesis. It has not been shown to push Leydig cells to make more testosterone.
Now the systemic hormone response. The best modern dataset is Soberg et al. 2021 in Cell Reports Medicine, which documented large acute spikes in norepinephrine (around 200 to 300 percent above baseline) from cold exposure. Cold reliably activates the sympathetic nervous system. What that paper and others did not show is a durable increase in serum testosterone. Cold spikes catecholamines and cortisol. Testosterone is not part of that acute signature in any robust way.
People also cite older Finnish sauna and cold work from around 1991, which examined hormonal responses to heat and cold cycling. Those studies generally found transient shifts in stress hormones and no durable, practically meaningful testosterone increase. They are small, dated, and frequently quoted out of context. They are not evidence that cold plunging boosts testosterone.

Cold exposure, cortisol and the hormonal stress response
A cold plunge is a controlled stressor, and like any acute stressor it activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. Within the first minute, norepinephrine and adrenaline surge, heart rate jumps, and cortisol begins to rise. This is the source of the sharp, awake, almost euphoric feeling people describe after getting out.
Here is the nuance that the testosterone narrative tends to get backward. Acute cold raises cortisol, it does not lower it. Some cold plunge advocates argue that regular practice lowers baseline cortisol over time, and therefore unburdens testosterone, since chronically high cortisol can suppress the reproductive axis. The first half of that, that adaptation blunts the acute stress response with repeated exposure, has reasonable support. The second half, that this produces a measurable rise in baseline testosterone, does not. It is a plausible-sounding chain with no solid human evidence connecting the last link.
For most healthy men, a short plunge is a mild, manageable stressor with quick recovery. The catecholamine spike is the real, repeatable effect, and it is also why cold is studied more for mood, focus, and alertness than for hormones. Cold plunge vs sauna for hormones
The heat and cold comparison is where the sperm-versus-testosterone distinction matters most. Repeated sauna use warms the whole body, including the testes, and that warming is the same mechanism that lowers sperm parameters in hot tub studies. So for fertility specifically, frequent intense heat is a mild negative and cold avoids that negative. This is a real and documented difference.
For testosterone itself, though, neither modality has strong evidence of raising baseline levels. Sauna has cardiovascular and mortality data behind it (the Finnish Kuopio cohort work by Laukkanen and colleagues), but that is not a testosterone result. Cold has the catecholamine and mood data. Temperature and timing that matter most
Because there is no validated testosterone protocol, the practical advice is the same as for any other cold plunge goal: train the documented response safely, and do not assume colder or longer buys you a hormonal bonus. Most cold immersion research uses water around 50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 15 degrees Celsius) for 2 to 5 minutes. Going to extreme cold to chase a testosterone effect that the evidence does not support is the wrong trade. It raises hypothermia and cold shock risk for a benefit that has never been demonstrated. Realistic expectations for men
If higher testosterone is your actual goal, the cold plunge is not where the leverage is. The interventions with real evidence behind them are unglamorous and well known. Consistent sleep of 7 to 9 hours has a direct effect on testosterone, with even one week of restricted sleep shown to lower daytime levels in young men (Leproult and Van Cauter, 2011, JAMA). Resistance training, maintaining a healthy body fat percentage, and limiting heavy alcohol use all move the needle far more than any thermal practice.
